After a tumultuous few months, Connecticut’s first offshore wind farm is beginning operation.
Revolution Wind is expected to provide more than 700 megawatts of electricity to power 350,000 homes across Connecticut and Rhode Island. The project was delayed because of several stop-work orders issued by the Trump administration.
Samantha Dynowski, director of the Sierra Club’s Connecticut Chapter, said feedback on Revolution Wind is positive so far.
“We need offshore wind and other renewable resources to make a transition away from that really unhealthy source of energy to cleaner, healthier, renewable resources,” she said.
It comes as the state’s Department of Energy and Environmental Protection considers final approval for a pipeline compressor station expansion. Brookfield town officials and other local groups sued to block the project, arguing it increases environmental harm. However, a judge dismissed the suit, saying residents can appeal after the agency makes its decision.
This new offshore wind farm is one part of the state’s work to achieve net-zero emissions and further its climate goals. However, there are concerns about Connecticut’s clean-energy transition maintaining momentum.
Dynowski said the offshore wind industry comes with benefits beyond energy generation.
“It’s also creating lots of good jobs,” she said. “Revolution Wind was built on the state pier in New London, and two other projects are also being built there that aren’t for Connecticut. So, Connecticut is an important location for the offshore wind industry.”
Around $400 million was invested to get the New London State Pier terminal up and running with New York State’s first offshore wind farm, creating 75 jobs at the facility. Revolution Wind created 1,200 jobs between Connecticut and Rhode Island, but supports more than 2,000 total jobs nationwide.
