This weekend, the Black Cat Book Fair brings together writers, poets and the local alt press — from indie publishers to zinemakers to printmakers and more — from both the Midcoast and around Maine for a weekend of sharing literature and community.

The fair is taking place on Saturday, August 22, from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., and Sunday, August 23, from 1 to 5 p.m.; events are being held at both the First Church Belfast and the Belfast Maskers Community Theatre.

The fair will feature a number of panel discussions and other talks on subjects ranging from the power of oral histories to the guidance and inspiration on starting your own press. The renowned poet Gary Lawless, who runs the singular Gulf of Maine Books in Brunswick with his wife Beth Leonard, will be in conversation with Belfast’s Poet Laureate, Audrey Gidman. Lawless, who is originally from Belfast, will read from his work during the talk, which is from 4 to 5:30 on Saturday, August 22, as will Gidman.
