Minnesota State Representative Melissa Hortman and her husband, Mark, were assassinated June 14th in the morning at their home in Brooklyn Park. State Senator John Hoffman and his wife, Yvette, were both shot multiple times by the same assailant. Fortunately, the Hoffman’s are expected to survive.
The following is the Elected Officials to Protect America (EOPA) statement on these politically motivated assassinations and attempted assassinations:
“In our Democracy elected officials are voted in by the people they represent. ‘We the people’ entrust those we elect to act in accordance with what they judge is the best for the community they serve. No matter the political affiliations, our democracy is meant to bring elected officials together to engage in reasoned political discourse and come to agreements over the issues that are the most important for the people they represent. Democracy is the form of government where this happens the best.
“These politically motivated assassinations and attempted assassinations are an affront to our democratic system. The law will bring the attacker to justice to the fullest measure. Life is sacred. Our laws protect all against these violent acts.
“We at Elected Officials to Protect America condemn all politically motivated acts of violence. Murder is murder. It is an act of cowardice, ignorance, and malice with focused intent to take life. It has no place in our democracy.
“Democratically elected officials deserve the respect and admiration for taking on the responsibilities to govern the people they represent no matter their political ideology. Working to help build better lives and livelihoods for their constituents takes a dedicated person who believes in our democratic system.
“Our thoughts and prayers are with the family, friends and community of these public servants.”
