Steve has been a Pitkin County resident since 1961, and is a graduate of Basalt High School and Stanford University with a degree in biology. He is serving his first term as County Commissioner. He has worn many different hats – as a cattle rancher on Capitol Creek, a part time driver for Snowmass Village Shuttle, and a retired school teacher and school bus driver from the Roaring Fork School District. He is a former board member and officer of the Snowmass/Capitol Creeks Caucus, the Pitkin County Weed Advisory Board and Agricultural Buildings Review Committee, the Wilderness Workshop, and the Basalt Elementary and Middle Schools parent/teacher organizations. Steve sings bass with the Aspen Choral Society, plays stand-up bass with local old time music groups, and is an avid cross countryskier.
